Tim showed his potential first at Michigan. He was a big man who provide a defensive presence, pass the ball, and contribute as a scorer/rebounder. With some tutelage and development , he could be a good NBA starting center. Or better.
Cleveland gave up on him too quickly. Mel Turpin was on billboards in the city, McCormick never got a chance to unpack his bags. Washington never really considered him either, even though he was longer than both Jeff Ruland and Rick Mahorn.
Seattle gave him Jack Sikma, a great guy to learn from. He advanced to the 76ers and showed still more potential. He could have been a better rebounder and shot blocker there, but was dealt for the more-floor bound Mike Gminski. With the Nets, he reached a new height.
Joe Barry Carroll, a lemon who screwed over both Golden State and New Jersey, was the reason he became a Rockets backup. He got hurt there in 1989 and never was the same.
This was a guy who got screwed by coaches. Karl, Bickerstaff, the Bullets, Guokas, Bob Weiss. This does happen to NBA players. Some simply have bad luck.
McCormick was never an all-star force at the NBA level, but proved with the Nets he belonged as a starter. He should have been given the chance to improve from that point, instead of being a glorified backup.
