"...and the small force of German settlers was ultimately overwhelmed." Really? Other Wikipedia articles report (correctly) that "the small force of German settlers" actively defended German East Africa for the entire four year duration of World War I and was still on the offensive several days after 11 Nov 18 when the Allies notified them under a flag of truce that the war was over.
