I and a friend discussed the name of the hitching stone. One obvious reason for the name is from the old English hitching, to be hitched. A place for marriages. Thoughts? 51.9.248.187 (talk) 19:42, 26 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

I agree - hitching means to be married.

A local antiquarian told me that it was a religious place and that a pagan priest would sit in the hole which would have been covered by cloth. There is a another hole from the main hole which you can see is the result of a fossil tree eroding, and the priest would have been spoken with through this, as though speaking for the stone/earth, giving counsel or marrying people. I don't know where my friend learned this, but it was in 1984 he told me.
