Krantz's A Primer of Mathematical Writing goes into great length regarding how a mathematical definition is constructed: https://arxiv.org/abs/1612.04888

For example, see page 15 for using the construction "Let xxx be a xxx" to introduce variables. See p. 76 for the use of "if" in place of "if and only if" in definitions.
