I feel someone fluent in French (language which most histories of Tahiti are written in now) can find some more modern information about the subject since most of the English sources used here about the breed are fairly old.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 17:15, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

The Tahitian Dog was once considered a separate species and given these binomial classifications:

  • Canis otahitensis; Reichenbach (1836: 46)
  • Canis familiaris orthotus otahitensis; Reichenbach ("Naturg. Raubth.": 141)
  • Canis pacificus; Smith (1845: 210, 296)
  • Canis familiaris otahitensis; Giebel (1859: 844)
