Merger proposal
[edit]I believe the SYN1 article article should be merged into this article. In spite of the first sentence of the SYN1 article (which I believe was misleading and now has been changed), the Gene Wiki pages are about both the protein and the gene that encodes it. The two subjects are so closely related that in the vast majority of cases, these two subjects should be kept on the same page. Cheers. Boghog (talk) 19:34, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- This is a point of disambiguation. The gene is not the protein and and the protein is not the gene. (A protein is comprised of amino acids and genes are comprised of nucleotides and they are two entirely different chemical compounds, to be more direct. ) Per Wikipedia guidelines, there should be two separate pages as they are two distinctly different entities.
- Substantial information can be provided on the protein and the gene, separately in many cases.

- Of course a gene is not the same as a protein. That much is clear. But the two topics are so interrelated it makes sense to include them on the same page. Boghog (talk) 19:36, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- That much wasn't clear until edits were made. Distinctions were not defined for the action of the proteins themselves, versus the gene. For a lay person, they appear to be muddled together. I requested review by a third party, who independently voiced the same concern and provided some insight on the nomenclature issues, which I will put on this talk page. Membrance
[edit]In section "Protein", the last sentence says:
This phosphoprotein is loosely associated with the vesicular membrance and is easily dissociated by treatment with a salt, versus a detergent being required for its removal from the membrane.
