Four cylinder and twin

The article links to Inline-four engine and V-twin engine in reference to the rules for four cylinder engines and twins, but is there any rule that these must be inline fours and V twins? I realize in practice it might be moot, although I would think a V4 engine entry is within the realm of imagination. But there are no general articles to link to on fours or twins -- only I4, V4, I2 and V2.
