Mummers Parade
[edit]The "string bands" in the annual Mummers Parade in Philadelphia are very very different from the old-time Appalachian string bands that this article describes. The Mummers Parade string bands include saxophones, clarinets, accordions, drums, and glockespiels, and rarely have mandolins or guitars. The mention of the Mummers Parade string bands in this article implies that they are old-time Appalachian string bands. They are not. Not even close. They are a distinctive part of the Mummers Parade, and except for the name "string band" and the presence of string basses and violins, there is no resemblance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.156.135.247 (talk) 16:44, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
"percussion instruments such as violin and banjo"
[edit]Those are string instruments. I am unfamiliar with the history so I do not know which part ought to be edited, but I'm inclined to think "percussion" should say "string". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.196.203.200 (talk) 19:46, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
??
[edit]No mention of any of history of early string band music in the U.S. The first tab is way too long and could be combined with another section. The high level of detail — when discussion how African American slaves were forced to play percussive (relevance?) and string instruments to prevent them from jumping off the ship — is a stark contrast to all of the history when the slaves got to the U.S. This article honestly felt a bit like a joke and should probably be scrapped and rewritten. ~2026-35242-27 (talk) 03:56, 17 June 2026 (UTC)
History
[edit]The main editor of this must add more history that expands beyond slaves being forced to play string instruments. Again, this page feels like a complete joke. ~2026-35242-27 (talk) 21:14, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
