Proposed merge

This article hinges on GeoWizard popularising this activity; I see no reason why this stub can't be merged into the GW article. The article implies that other people who have done these missions have been inspired by GW, which is something that can be addressed in the GW article rather than this stubby content fork. As things stand, it doesn't seem worthy to have a standalone article. MIDI (talk) 21:02, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

• I support a merge. The only issue is that this article doesn't mention GW, meaning the challenge is at least partially notable outside of his attempts. But I don't see this article getting expanded easily with the current sources, and would probably be best included as part of the GeoWizard article. --Cerebral726 (talk) 21:10, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

• The scoremyline.com website does not act as a reliable source, so adding it in without a secondary source makes it at least somewhat promotional and certainly WP:OR. Therefore that leaves only the Guardian article and the BBC Cairngorms article, which seems hardly enough to meet WP:GNG--Cerebral726 (talk) 13:27, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Proposed Split

I was looking for somewhere to read about / populate a table of attempted and complete "straight line missions".

It seems like the page for this has been merged with one for a single YouTube channel. I don't see the logic in the continual association of a topic with its popularizer/inspiration.

Can this please be split again so one can read about the activity and look up previous attempt locations, routes, and persons. Fadaberry (talk) 01:08, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

I strongly support this. As written, the section mainly discusses GeoWizard but lots of other notable straight line missions have taken place e.g. by Storror or . Also lots of activity around the scoring of straight lines . I will do the split if no one objects soon. WikiNukalito (talk) 05:30, 25 May 2025 (UTC)

@WikiNukalito did you read the merge proposal above before splitting this off? Unless there is reliable coverage (not just YouTube videos from the people doing it) of straight-line missions from people other than GeoGuessr, this should not have a separate article. Although I think numerous videos of people doing the thing is reasonable evidence that it's a real activity, I accept Wikipedia's criteria are what they are. I've added many references, mostly from newspapers and info on other notable straight line traversals. I think the current article clearly demonstrates independence from GeoWizard. Suggestion: free open-source scoring tool

Disclosure: I am the author of the tool described below. Per WP:COI I am posting this as a suggestion on the talk page rather than editing the article directly, and have no objection if reviewing editors decide it does not meet the article's inclusion criteria.

I have published a single-file, open-source browser tool that scores straight-line missions: it takes the planned line and each team's GPS recording (GPX or Garmin FIT) and computes the maximum deviation, awards a medal tier (Platinum/Gold/Silver/Bronze) per team, displays a live leaderboard, and exports per-team PDF reports as well as a video of the playback. It runs entirely client-side, with no account or server upload required.

NPOV criteria

Are the criteria sufficiently wp:NPOV for wikipedia? If so, are the efforts of Nicholas Crane (in Two Degrees West) in 1997 and Tori James (who also cycled) in 2014 the first 'Straight Line Missions'? Darrelljon (talk) 04:36, 3 August 2026 (UTC)
