function

[edit]

mentions as to its function in vertebrates are lacking. is is because of lack of evidence? FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 20:12, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Rays inhale water through their spiracles. Polypteris inhales air through its spiracle. Usually it's something involving water or air going in or out, often with chemoreceptors for detecting free oxygen, CO2, etc. Zyxwv99 (talk) 20:57, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Spiracles are also missing in some pelagic sharks

See Wikipedia Shark page., Respiration section.
