'Solipsism': A Mad World

Attempting to understand this weird idea, what would be the point in debating this issue - or trying to support the concept of 'Solipsism' - if there is no world outside of someones mind? Solipsism is, at the core of itself, pretty useless, because, unlike other philosophical ideas that became popular during the Enlightenment, it doesn't try to achieve anything or answer any questions. It doesn't try to be an answer to the meaning of life. Therefore, by supporting solipsism, you would be just falsifying your own claim. It's a slippery and morally uncomfortable idea because it's weirdly pointless. So, to try and tie together all of the rambling I just did, to answer your question, there's not really a point to solipsism. But I'm no philosophy professor, so don't take my word for it. Since it looks not obvious to every reader, it can be used as a didactic tool about limits of human knowledge and the necessity of faith in any pragmatic action, even those believing in say monistic materialism. That is, no one can pretend to convince anyone else on purely metaphysical and logical considerations, since no one is arguing from an absolute certainty position.

Now "what’s the point" is always depending on context, so there is no absolute reason why people would debate the point (solipsism or otherwise), and how/why it was considered in any discussion should always be grounded in elements of some actual debate. Psychoslave (talk) 11:26, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
