Merge/rewrite
[edit]This article should probably be integrated into Western concert flute - the term "simple system flute" is not currently used in that article, and "German flute" is defined in a different context. The contents of this stub are particuarly relevant to the history of the Irish flute, so I don't think its important this be merged rather than deleted. Will do a formal merger proposal once some references are collected (my current intention is to do this myself, but we'll see what happens...)Dereksmootz (talk) 04:04, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
Did some general overhauling and additions, and added references. Removed the statement that "simple system flute" was synonymous with "German flute", as simple system flutes were made in other countries as well - links in the article demonstrate English and French models.Dereksmootz (talk) 15:39, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
Changes after an AfD
[edit]I nominated this article for deletion on the grounds that it is a duplication of material in the main Western concert flute and Irish flute articles, basically thinking along the same lines as Dereksmootz. The current situation with the AfD is that this article is useful, to cover the period between the traverso and the Boehm flute.
I have tried to tighten up the lead to make it clear what the subject of the article actually is. For the same reason, I removed a paragraph on alternative meanings, which confused "simple system flute" with "simple flute" and attempted to open the article up to discussing every conceivable flute from prehistoric onwards, excluding only the Boehm flute. That's not helpful, and doesn't match sources.
I think this article should try to avoid the Irish flute because although the term is commonly used to refer to Irish flutes, we already have a whole dedicated article on that subject. I would still have nothing against a merger, but if the article is to stand, it has to have a unique subject, not a mere duplication.
I haven't done anything yet with the construction section, but would note that oldflutes.com has a wealth of useful information on the period. I should probably raid the library for some of my favourite flute history books though! Elemimele (talk) 16:20, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
