Value of historical dollars in "today's" currency

Is this correct? : On the page it says some time prior to 1836, Shrtleff donated $10,000 (which is listed as $277,455 in 2023). Then, in 1910, Carnegie donated $15,000 (which is listed as $490,500 in 2023).

The math works out that 1836 dollars are worth roughly $27.75 now, while 1910 dollars are worth around $32.70 now. I know there was devaluation of dollars in the 1800s but the table at https://www.officialdata.org/us/inflation/1800?amount=1 at least shows them as being $32.76 (1836) and $32.07 (1910) in 2023 dollars.

I see these 'present-day value' figures everywhere, but I do not understand how they are arrived at. Anyway my broader question is where do these figures come from? and why no attribution? 2600:1700:D1E0:60E0:3160:CFBC:BCB7:A7B6 (talk) 06:49, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
