The current revision as of this comment states:

Until 1200, the Sharifate was held by a member of the Hashim clan, not to be confused with the larger clan of Banu Hashim from which all Sharifs claim descent.

where the wiki link at "Hashim" leads to the page on Hashim bin AbdManaf the progenitor of the clan of Banu Hashim.

There is no distinction between the two entities, even in Wikipedia itself.
