I would gladly have retained the reference to New Orleans street-style sand dance if there had been any reference to justify it. If such sources exist, they can be cited. The source cited in the previous version did not really support the statements it was used to back up. Unfortunately, the early history of sand dance is undocumented and it's difficult to avoid speculation. Sand for traction definitely preceded sand for shuffling/sliding on the American variety stage, and it is reasonable to assume that "sanding" developed because of that. Sanding floors?
