Vertical axis or vertical plane

In geometry, an axis has two, opposite directions. A plane has angles from 0° to 360°—or equivalently, a pair of axes. There is a vertical axis, namely the directions up and down. The saccule senses whether we’re being pulled/pushed up or down. But does it also sense acceleration in another axis? Or does it only sense the vertical axis? Reading this article, I was also left wondering which axis is detected in addition to the vertical axis. Unlike the horizontal plane mentioned similarly in Utricle (ear), there is no single obvious vertical plane. Lumarius (talk) 13:55, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
