Removed stub status - what more is there to say about this subject?
I started this page to see what is the smallest subject in amateur radio I could write about. I think it's useful, but it will always be a short article! --Albany45 02:52, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The S-meter system is NOT subjective, it is defined and objective. The fact that most receivers implement it incorrectly does not make it subjective. Ericp-nh (talk) 13:19, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

The link that points to the definition of the way an S-meter is supposed to work - Reference #5, currently: https://web.archive.org/web/20050316191147/http://www.algonet.se/~k-jarl/ssa/IARU/smeter.html was added in 2006. At the time it pointed at a page on a personal site and has since been updated to refer to the archived link.

The apparently actual standards document, titled "BM/134 - S-Meter Standards" is available within the 1981 IARU conference proceedings on pages 33 and 34 of this PDF: https://www.iaru-r1.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/GC_1981_Brighton_confrep.pdf

However, while it was marked as "Action completed" in the 1990 IARU conference (See: https://www.iaru-r1.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/GC_1981_Brighton_confrep.pdf), several altered versions of the content appear within the "HF Managers Handbook", which excludes some of the "standard".

It's unclear precisely what the current status of "BM/134" is, and it's unclear who the authority on this matter is, let alone where it's published beyond being included within conference proceedings.

I note that the current link has at least one error in it, in that for reasons that I'm unable to explain, item 3 states that it applies to "bands above 144 MHz", leaving the space between 30 MHz and 144 MHz undefined, which is not the case for the original "BM/134" document.

I'd love to know how to fix this "properly".
