Source of Rugby’s Origin
[edit]Can anybody offer a good source on Rugby’s origins? I’ve seen some stuff but nothing particularly authoritative. Sportismygame (talk) 22:23, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Questionable paragraph
[edit]"Rugby union spread from the Home Nations of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with other early proponents of the sport including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and France. The sport is primarily followed in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Georgia, Southern Africa, Argentina, and in more recent times, Japan, Korea, South America, the United States and Canada, its growth occurring during the expansion of the British Empire and through French proponents (Rugby Europe) in Europe. Countries that have adopted rugby union as their de facto national sport include Fiji, Georgia, Madagascar, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Wales."
Apart from the fact that the UK should be split up here (since it plays as four teams despite attempts to abolish the separate teams by the Olympic committee and informal approaches by politicians like !!Tony Banks, Baron Stratford|Tony Banks]] etc), the idea it has only appeared in Japan, South America and the USA in recent times is nonsense. One of the oldest rugby teams in the world is in Uruguay, and Chile and Argentina have been playing it to a considerable degree since the late nineteenth century. It is more recent perhaps in the northern parts of South America. It was in parts of the USA and Canada *before* Gridiron, and in fact influenced American and Canadian football.
Another country which gets no mentions here is Georgia. It has adopted rugby as a national sport. Rugby also has a minor, but very long term presence in Germany, Spain, Portugal and Russia going back before 1900, and continuing to the present day. ~2026-25820-09 (talk) 17:53, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
rugby union in uruguay
[edit]the wikipedia page for rugby union in uruguay should be consulted to remedy the mention of rugby in uruguay in this article. 1951 might be the year a national governing body and league were formed, but the game itself has been played in uruguay simce the late 19th century. ~2026-32510-81 (talk) 09:20, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
