Copyvio checking
[edit]While patrolling this page I notice the copyvio flags from Earwig and the Patrolling App. Having checked them both, I think the problem are that his awards, titles and memberships are long and "standardized terms" which are raising the copyvio concern. I can't see any other copyvio issues, and therefore am fine with this. thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 15:09, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

Style comments:
- I'm seeing a lot of short paragraphs that could be condensed. At the very least, I think single-sentence paragraphs should either be expanded or merged to a different paragraph.
Done
- There are some duplinks. You can find them with this tool.
Done (thanks for the tool)
- On a somewhat related note, avoid overlinking in general. Industrial engineering, lung cancer, the federal government of the United States, the Middle East, luxury goods, and vocation should all be familiar to most readers, and clicking on links to these articles would not help a reader better understand the topic at hand — a Filipino restaurateur and businessman. The guideline on overlinking specifically advises against linking major settlements — exactly how these are defined isn't clear — I would imagine that Manila and Quezon City probably qualify, at the very least, and I can say confidently that Dubai does not need to be linked.
Done (for cities, I delinked Dubai and Manila, but Quezon City (as a part of Metro Manila) is not that well known outside the Philippines even though it is bigger than Manila proper)
- See MOS:PEOPLETITLES for things like
dean Gavino Mendoza
andchairman William H. Quasha
. "Dean" and "Chairman" should be capitalized here. Later on, you saySecurity Bank majority shareholder and chairman Fredrick Y. Dy
, which is a little more confusing because "chairman" is an actual title and "majority shareholder" is a false title. I advise rewording entirely.
Done
- I have a couple comments about the references. For one, source 12's title should not be in all caps. Put it in title case. Secondly, WP:CITESTYLE allows for the titles of minor works (like newspaper articles) to be given either in title case or sentence case, but the article should pick one or the other and stick with it (using the source's capitalization is not considered consistent).
Done
- Use {{lang}} templates when using Chinese text.
Done
- MOS:NATIONALITY is your friend. He shouldn't be called "Chinese-Filipino" in the first sentence; it should just state his legal nationality (and China does not allow dual citizenship). I notice that this is the only place in the article that specifically mentions his Chinese heritage. The Early life section says he came from an immigrant family but does not explicitly identify them as Chinese. China is home to many ethnic and cultural groups, so I would advise identifying where in China his family originates from if that information is available.
Done. His paternal uncle, the founder of Ling Nam, was a third-generation immigrant from Guangzhou (see Ling Nam) but there is no explicit information on the rest of the family, so I cannot include anything about his origins.
Chowking offered Filipino and Chinese cuisine.
Why is Chinese cuisine linked but not Filipino cuisine? Also, neither is linked in the body of the article.
Done
He invested most of his time in St. Luke's Medical Center
"Most of" his time? In the body it saysHe was mainly preoccupied with his work at St. Luke's Medical Center and the Rotary Club of Makati
, which comes across as less intense, and the source itself just says that "much of his time" was spent on this work.
Done
laboring like a carabao (water buffalo).
Right now, this rather poetic language is in wikivoice, but it shouldn't be. Please attribute it to whoever used it originally.
Done, (Removed)
a bachelor's degree in General Management.
I'm not sure this needs to be capitalized. One wouldn't capitalize any of the words in a "degree in biology", for instance.
Done
He would receive the Triple A Award (Alumni Achievement Award), the highest honor for AIM alumni, in 1982, during his tenure with Ling Nam.
Now we're jumping forward through time to discuss an award for work with which he hasn't yet gotten involved. I would advise against mentioning this here at all. You mention it later in the Awards section, but with a different year (1981).
Done (removed)
- Do not say that the restaurant chain is still thriving "today" or "now".
- Opted to remove that bit because it's not about Kuan. Instead, I added Ling Nam#History as a See also link
- For the first footnote, see MOS:'S.
Done
- "Extremely indebted" links to an article on the concept of utang na loob, but this term is not used in this article. Mention it; this feels like an Easter egg link.
Done
- "CEO" is not linked but "COO" is. I would advise linking and writing out both terms; they're only used once each.
Done
chairman of the affiliated St. Luke's College of Medicine
Probably should add "of the board of".
Done
Kuan has received numerous awards throughout his career.
Probably best to put this in simple past tense. I imagine he won't be receiving any more.
Done
- The Philippine Star should have the the capitalized and the whole thing should be in italics and linked.
Done
Source checks:
- Ref 2c checks out (although the page range is wrong; it should be 50–51).
- Ref 2h checks out.
- Ref 7a checks out.
- Ref 2p checks out, though I'd advise changing "both" to "each" (so it's clear they don't collectively own 50%).
- Ref 16 checks out.
- Refs 20c/22a check out.
- Ref 20d checks out. Ref 1e is used to support the same statement, but I'm not seeing how it does.
- Ref 20e checks out.
- Ref 1g technically checks out, although the source says the ₱300 million is just annual earnings.
- Ref 25b does not specifically say that he was cremated, only that he wished to be. However, I think it's a reasonable assumption that he was if there's no indication otherwise.
Good overall. I'll be placing this on hold. — An anonymous username, not my real name 19:43, 26 May 2026 (UTC)

- Regarding his family, they are still not described as Chinese in body, only the lead (the lead of any article should only include information present in the body). I also don't see full compliance with WP:CITESTYLE, but I won't require it since this guideline is generally not well known or consistently followed among editors, and the good article rules are pretty lax regarding citation formatting. Just add as much information on his ethnicity as is available to Early life and I'd say we're ready. — An anonymous username, not my real name 02:16, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
- @An anonymous username, not my real name: I added that he was Chinese. — VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 04:26, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
- (The source is about Chinese Filipino business leaders, and the authors asked him about his adherence to Chinese values, so it is pretty clear that it is saying he is Chinese.) — VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 04:28, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
