Name origin

• Richards Bay (N 2832 CC). Town 25 km east of Empangeni and 60 km south of Mtubatuba. Administered by a health committee since 1954. Takes its name from the bay at the mouth of the Mhlatuze River, which was named after Sir Frederick Richards, Commodore of the Cape station of the Royal Navy and subsequently Admiral, who was in charge of the naval force assisting the land forces against the Zulu in 1879.The Zulu name of Richards Bay isCwebeni, 'at the lagoon'.
