I have a first-hand story about how Richard Maloof was discovered by Lawrence Welk that differs from the article. Maloof didn't attend Sac. State or the other schools mentioned before being discovered. Instead, he was a student at American River College (ARC), a community college in Sacramento, struggling to pass music theory. His band director at ARC was a trombone player who recently sat next to me in a community band. My trombone player friend said: in 1967, Maloof was at a gig at Lake Tahoe when Lawrence Welk also had a gig at Harrahs Lake Tahoe. It was Welk's attending of Maloof's gig that inspired Welk to recruit Maloof. Timhowardriley (talk) 23:28, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
