[edit]Looks like just a definition, should probably be transwikied.--Doug.(talk • contribs) 03:25, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- For now that's about all it is, but red chalk has seen a lot of use in drawing; some editor(s) with a good grasp of art history could make an article out of this. __Just plain Bill (talk) 06:02, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

– No clear primary topic vs. the sanguine personality of the Four temperaments, the DAB page should likely be at primary. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 00:05, 8 July 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. TarnishedPathtalk 04:15, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- Agreed, based on all-time mass views, Google Books Ngrams, WikiNav (clickstreams), there's little reason to assume it's not ambiguous. I'd suggest the expedited WP:RM/TR process for such a thing in the future. (Support disambiguation) --Joy (talk) 12:28, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose Sanguine (drawing); "(drawing)" as disambiguation should be reserved for articles about individual drawings. Sanguine (drawing medium), Sanguine (chalk) and Sanguine (red chalk) could be possibilities. I'm not sure that the medium is most commonly called "sanguine" in English, though; the Art & Architecture Thesaurus's preferred term is simply "red chalk". Red chalk is currently a disambiguation page, and possibly this article title may have come about as WP:NATURALDISAMBIGUATION. "Red chalk drawing" is a much more common phrase than "sanguine drawing". Ham II (talk) 12:48, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Ham II can we then just use Red chalk drawing for this topic? --Joy (talk) 16:34, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- Or maybe just distinguish those two topics by case, using a redirect Red Chalk for the Hunstanton Formation, and the title Red chalk here? --Joy (talk) 16:36, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- Definitely DAB but not sure how. Perhaps Sanguine (chalk). Sources online seem to sometimes use sanguine interchangeably to refer to the chalk, the technique, and the drawings themselves. --MYCETEAE 🍄🟫—talk 01:19, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose Sanguine (drawing) per Ham II - Red chalk drawing or similar seems the way to go. This is I think the term used by dealers & museums these days. Johnbod (talk) 02:39, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose Sanguine (drawing) per Ham II; support move to Red chalk (per Joy) and no primary topic. Wracking talk! 00:57, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Zxcvbnm could you confirm that you're also fine with e.g. red chalk drawing as a compromise destination, so someone can close this?
- There's a lot of bold oppose in this discussion, but it's not actually contentious, let's get it over the finish line. --Joy (talk) 07:50, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, I am also fine with that as a compromise. It's still way better than where it is now. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 07:54, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- My first preference would be to move this article to Red chalk (replacing the dab page currently there), with Red chalk drawing as perhaps a second preference, or perhaps third after "Red chalk" with disambiguation in parentheses. The only article from which this needs to be disambiguated is Hunstanton Formation, on something which is apparently no longer called "Red Chalk". The disambiguation could be done in a hatnote on this article rather than with a dab page. Usually article titles for drawing materials don't include "drawing" afterwards, and they refer to the materials themselves rather than the drawings made with them. Silverpoint is a close analogy, but other examples are Colored pencil, Conté and Pastel. Charcoal (art) is, if anything, a closer analogy, but that one adds parenthetical disambiguation. Pencil drawing and Plumbago drawing are exceptions with titles similar to Red chalk drawing, but Pencil and Plumbago (and Charcoal, too) unavoidably link to different topics in a way that isn't the case, I think, with Red chalk. I've been waiting until now to get hold of my copy of the British Museum and the Getty's Looking at Prints, Drawings and Watercolours: A Guide to Technical Terms (2006); I can now confirm that its entry for this medium is under "Red chalk", whereas it notes that "'Sanguine' is another term for red chalk which is often found in older references" (p. 13). - Great, thanks.
- @TarnishedPath any remaining qualms? A leftover disambiguation page will be left behind, we can get rid of that afterwards. --Joy (talk) 10:09, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Joy, I don't see any discussion on what happens to Sanguine (disambiguation). Does anyone have any input on this? TarnishedPathtalk 10:23, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
- There's consensus is to move it to Sanguine (and reformat it to avoid the implication of primary topic). --Joy (talk) 10:26, 20 July 2025 (UTC)
