A red moon is another name for a lunar eclipse. However, a lunar eclipse is only meant to be called a red moon when the moon is colored red or orange. It is possible for the moon to be yellow or green.

Red moons only occur during lunar eclipses which are also blue moons.

December 31, 2009 is an example of a red moon.
