I removed the sentences "A similar sounding name of French origin is "Raoul" (French form of Ralph), along with the Spanish "Raúl". It is a very common name in Europe." and "Also the Egyptian God of Sun is named Ra and Rahul is related to that."

Both are not related to Rahul! If there is any connection(which i doubt it) it should be documented.

Major concern regarding pages which describe names

This page and I suppose other pages which describe names and even list famous and successful personalities having a similar or same name, will be repeatedly vandalised. People have tried adding in their own names, friends' names or any such irrelevant reference which do not merit mention in an encyclopedia page. I request the administrators to either lock down pages describing names, or very closed user groups and societies be handed over the responsibility. --122.163.64.3 (talk) 11:16, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

This happens all the time, and it is just the nature of the project. Luckily there are lots of people like me who hang around and watch for that stuff and revert it ;) That said, it seems like people named Rahul have some sort of problem with this. Buddha's relation to his son rahula is well documented and Buddha left his palace after seeing him. Buddha saw his child and family as last ties that bond him to this world, blocking his search into the other world. Rahul is also said to be another name for Ra, the Sun God of Egypt. In Sanskrit, Rahul means "able, efficient". To Gautam Buddha, it meant 'bondage or obstruction'. It also means someone who is not bound by anything; he is ever changing for the worldly good. Ra - means spiritual light in Sanskrit, Hul - comes from the Biblical word which means "pain". Removing some of the meanings that are unverified or false

Hi,

I've actually had a look through the sources that cite the "Conqueror of Miseries" meaning, as well as the "Moon, Able/Efficient" meanings for this name. The book given as a citation for the first meaning DOES NOT contain the word Rahul, either as is or in a modified form. The closest name to Rahul that occurs in the book cited is Rahu, a Hindu mythological figure that is responsible for eclipses.

Now, I do believe Rahu is actually the inspiration behind the name Rahula, which is where Rahul probably comes from, the Rahu --> Rahula connection being derived from the "Eclipse --> Obstruction ---> Fetter" sequence or at least, that's how I believe the meaning of the name should be interpreted. Although I will have to do some research to confirm this and will try to post the required documentation to try and convince you of this.

Regardless, I've not been able to find a single source that can definitively cite a meaning for the word Rahul other than the sources that state the name is derived from Rahula. Every other meaning given here on Wikipedia is completely unsubstantiated and has no business being here, including the Arabic one which actually seems to refer to the name "Raheel", which seems to be completely unrelated to Rahul. If there is a connection, it hasn't been found yet, so I'd recommend throwing that out too.

I mention this because literally every other source on the Internet has seemingly taken this Wikipedia page's word as gospel and has spread the same meaning everywhere. I can't imagine where exactly these meanings came from but I think being accurate should take precedence over giving a name cool meanings that have nothing to do with the name.

Sorry if this isn't the proper procedure for this, I'm new to this whole thing.

As I've stated in the Talk page, I believe this article is spreading misinformation by indicating that the name Rahul has meanings that are not supported by any of the citations that are given in the page. The only meaning of the name that can be taken seriously is the Rahula claim, for which there is some evidence. As such, I would like to request that the text be changed from

"Rahul is a popular male name in India and has a variety of meanings. The earliest meaning found in the Upanishads is "conqueror of all miseries."[1] [citation needed] Later use of the word is attributed to the Buddha, who named his son Rahula as he felt that family ties could be an obstacle in the path to renunciation and nirvana. Buddha uttered Rahul when he first saw his son and gave a new meaning "relationship" and "bondage" to this name.[2] Rahul means Moon, Able/efficient in Sanskrit and Pali. Rahul also means "Traveler" in Arabic."
