Open questions

Here are a few historically interesting questions not answered by the article yet and thus needing further research:

  • Was there a history of the RKM code prior to its standardization in IEC 62:1952 in 1952? It isn't mentioned in Buttner's handbook in the 1943 and 1946 editions (not checked later editions). Does this indicate that the notation was freshly invented for IEC 62:1952? By whom?
  • In the AWS/JAN tolerance code, the letters G, J, K, M were used for the tolerances 2%, 5%, 10%, 20%. Why were exactly these letters chosen and not some others? Why did the AWS/JAN specs not already include letters for 1% (F?) and 3% (H?)? What have been the exact names of those AWS/JAN specs?

Two more interesting questions:

  • Who first came up with the (non-standard) voltage notation like 1V8 for 1.8 V and when?
I can remember having seen this notation labelled on zener diodes in the 1980s, but this probably not the first usage.
  • Who first came up with the (even more non-standard) voltage notation like 1P8 for 1.8 V and when?
I haven't seen it being used until about a decade ago in conjunction with various kinds of power supplies, but perhaps it was in use for much longer elsewhere. It would also be interesting to learn why letter "P" was chosen, when there already was an IMO more suitable letter "V" in use. Does "P" stand for "power" or "positive voltage"? In the latter case, has someone also seen an "N" being used for negative voltages? As always, more usage examples and sources are welcome.

Deceptive redirection

The most famous part of the IEC 62 standard and its aliases is the Electronic color code, and the article on the color code has lots of wikilinks to the standard, but someone had the silly idea of making all those links redirect to the RKM code/notation instead of a page about all aspects of the standard, or even simply pointing to the color code article . 77.213.206.158 (talk) 16:52, 7 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
