Firefight

[edit]

Hey guys, police sources told the media (including from 2:01 in this Channel Nine News video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OKTu0yKAF4 ) the surviving/uninjured police fired back at Freeman but missed which was then reported by the media. This is not mentioned anywhere on this page and is very concerning to me given the sheer number of media references in this article and the significance of what would constitute a firefight occurring. If anyone would like to rectify this that would be great otherwise I'll edit the page myself. I'll dismiss the issue of the officer shooting himself in the leg for now, but not this issue of a firefight. ~2025-38353-09 (talk) 00:24, 4 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Murder

[edit]

@User:WWGB Would the category 2025 murders in Australia not be appropriate here as the victorian police say it is an murder investigation and treat it as such in there still ongoing investigation, as stated on the VIC police website. Victoria Police also refer to state homicide "cold cases" in the same way. The addition of the category should be seen from this angle, not as an accusation that the individual in connection to the shooting death of two police officers is responsible for their deaths. It is merely meant to show that a murder took place not accusing anyone of committing the murders. Nightmares26 (talk) 05:31, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

A murder investigation is quite different from a judicial finding of murder. What if a suspect is brought to trial and found not guilty by reason of insanity? Then a murder did not happen. At present, this is a homicide, but murder has not been established.
The pages WP:SUSPECT and Wikipedia:Choosing article titles about violence and deaths make clear that we should avoid use of murder until a conviction has been established. WWGB (talk) 06:11, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do we have a category for homicides? That would be less accusative. I would also note that there is no deadline. We can perfect the article as the legal situation progresses. HiLo48 (talk) 06:14, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
If a judicial finding of murder is the requirement for the category "Murder in {Year}" to be added then wouldn't hundreds of articles in Category:Unsolved murders, many of which also include a "Murder in {Year}" category be wrong as many didn't have formal inquests and not one was ever convicted? And what about articles on crimes where the perpetrator was killed and never convicted? If a person is ever brought to trial and found not guilty of the crime by reason of insanity would that change the fact, many articles on wikipedia still keep such categories even in the event of a judicial finding, there as dozens of examples in Category:People acquitted by reason of insanity where the categories still mention murder.
WP:SUSPECT relates to a living person accused of a crime, I am not accusing any person of the crime only that crime took place and is being investigated as a murder. If a person is never found for the crime, does that mean a murder never took place as there is no convictions, even if police deem it as such, such as with many Category:Unsolved murders that have no formal inquest?
Wikipedia:Choosing article titles about violence and deaths is a naming convention used to avoid systemic bias for articles, it does not mention body of text or use of categories. Nightmares26 (talk) 07:25, 17 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Murder categories now appropriate since Freeman is dead. WWGB (talk) 05:13, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Are they? That seems very hypocritical of you. WP:BLPCRIME also applies to the recently deceased. To quote a text bit from the BLP policy: Generally, this policy does not apply to material concerning people who are confirmed dead by reliable sources. The only exception would be for people who have recently died, in which case the policy can extend for an indeterminate period beyond the date of death—six months, one year, two years at the outside. Also no judicial finding of murder or conviction as stated by you. Hmmmm?
I do believe Dezi is guilty as sin though. ~2026-11472-32 (talk) 02:10, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
WP:BLPCRIME only applies to a living person. Therefore, it is no longer relevant. Freeman's shot at innocence died along with him. He can be called a murderer because a dead man cannot sue for libel. WWGB (talk) 09:08, 5 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Dezi Freeman Article

[edit]

Should a Dezi Freeman article be created? It seems warranting, given his his murders, his escape, and his eventual death? User1519203

No. He is only notable for one event. Anything that needs to be said about him can be included in the shooting article. WWGB (talk) 05:11, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
See WP:BLP1E and WP:NCRIME. SnowyRiver28 (talk) 07:51, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
