[edit]I have replaced the deletion notice because an explanation of the little-known real historical phenomenon behind the common phrase 'popularity contest' would be much more than a dictionary definition. - As you say, "an explanation... would be much more than a dicdef." At least if it had sources. But at present it's not. And the earliest date given in Oxford English Dictionary is a US source from 1901 - where does "late 19th century" come from? Sources, please. PamD 23:26, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
- In the little bit of time I've had to look elsewhere (since Wikipedia didn't have the encyclopedic information I came looking for when I was prompted to create this page), I haven't yet found scholarly work on the phenomenon. There probably isn't much, but because the metaphorical use is SO common and the actual contests so long ago, it's proving a rather difficult thing to search for. A friend and I have found mentions of the contests in late 19th century and early 20th century newspaper archives. I haven't included these primary sources yet because that seems to be original research. ("Any interpretation of primary source material requires a reliable secondary source for that interpretation.") I can put them on the talk page when I get back to my other computer.
