Use of social media sources for claims about living persons
[edit]Claims about living persons, such as their opinions on contentious topics, are not acceptable unless they are made by the subject and verified. Note that:
- Any claim in such a source by a third party is unacceptable, even if authenticated.
- Twitter's verification in respect of posts after Musk's takeover is not reliable enough to authenticate posters.
- Bluesky uses domain verification: if a username is a domain other than one ending in .bsky.social, it may be authenticated. All of the ones cited are .bsky.social usernames so they are not authenticated.
- I don't know how to authenticate Instagram posts, so I've removed them. Some might be reliable.

- Verified accounts on Instagram have a blue badge with a white checkmark; see John Boyne's account (since he's the primary subject of recent edits) for example. Unlike X/Twitter, I believe Instagram verification is still considered reliable enough for Wikipedia purposes. Funcrunch (talk) 17:27, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've reviewed all the Instagram posts and it seems none of them are verified, though without being able to log in (I don't have an account) I couldn't see their profiles to be 100% sure. Additionally the Bad Betty Press post is a third party claim so unacceptable anyway, as is the purported screenshot on Bluesky in a comment. Hairy Dude (talk) 09:48, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- You should be able to see the main profile page (and the verification badge) without logging in; I logged out of my account on Instagram (as well as Facebook and Twitter) years ago. Funcrunch (talk) 14:56, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
