The 14th-century English poet Geoffrey Chaucer spoke of "pestilence" in "The Pardoner's Tale", referring to the Black Death:

I have searched for information on when plague and other illnesses (w/major impact) swept historical Europe for quite some time. Thankfully, this landed on my desk courtesy of in the April publication of Awesome Stories.
