Earl of Bute missing from the list of extant earldoms

The Earldom of Bute, created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1703, appears to be missing from the “Extant earldoms” table.

The title is still extant. In 1796, the 4th Earl of Bute was created Marquess of Bute in the Peerage of Great Britain, and the Scottish earldom has since been held as a subsidiary title of the marquessate. This should not, however, exclude it from a list of extant Scottish earldoms, especially since the table includes other Scottish titles whose holders possess higher-ranking titles in another peerage.

Should the Earl of Bute therefore be added to the table, perhaps in italics, with a note such as:

Earl of Bute — 14 April 1703 — Marquess of Bute in the Peerage of Great Britain.

Alternatively, if the table is intentionally meant to exclude subsidiary titles, this should be stated explicitly and applied consistently throughout the list. Fega (talk) 09:00, 21 July 2026 (UTC)

Other missing title (not only Earl of Bute)

The list provided here (in this wiki) is not complete; some titles are missing, among which the most important are probably Earl of Bute (also Marquess of Bute, see talk above), Earl of Dumfries (other Scottish title of the Marquess of Bute, but with a different remainder) and Viscount Stormont (also Earl of Mansfield in the Peerage of Great Britain).
