Hi guys,

Can someone add this to the actress's article?

The key role of Mary will be played by Israeli actress Odeya Rush, with other roles going to Peter O'Toole and Julia Ormond. Filming begins this summer.

Based on a script by Benedict Fitzgerald (The Passion of the Christ) and Barbara Nicolosi, the film will be handled by Hyde Park International in international territories and by Lionsgate in North America.

and...

Israeli thesp Odeya Rush has been tapped to play the role of Mary in Alister Grierson's "Mary Mother of Christ," which Lionsgate will distribute in North America next year and which will mark the first pic exec produced by Texas-based evangelical pastor Joel Osteen. Rush joins Julia Ormond and Peter O'Toole in the pic, which is considered the biblical prequel to the story of "The Passion of Christ."

"Sanctum" helmer Grierson will direct from an original screenplay by Benedict Fitzgerald ("The Passion of Christ") and Barbara Nicolosi.

Family

[edit]

Where is her father's family from? He was born in Israeli, but the article says they are Ashkenazi, so presumably the family came from Germany. Austria, France, Russia?

Israeli by citizenship

[edit]

According to the reliable secondary sources we have available, Rush is and remains an Israeli citizen by birth. She does reside and work in the United States, but unless credible evidence is given that she has been naturalized or granted U.S. citizenship, the article will remain as it is today. Elizium23 (talk) 02:55, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Once again, if there is a source that explicitly asserts that Rush has been granted citizenship or naturalized then add it, but one that doesn't, is no help to this article. Elizium23 (talk) 22:01, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
You are claiming ownership over this article, this is violation of Wikipedia's rules, and I can also report you to the administrators. Sources are very ambiguous as to Rush's exact citizenship or nationality, and many sources will quote "Israeli", "Israeli-born" or even "Israeli-American". Who are you to decide whether these sources are accurate or valid? Quit this nonesense, or else I will be reporting you to the administrators.PacificWarrior101 (talk) 20:34, 7 November 2014 (UTC)PacificWarrior101Reply
I stand by what I said. We need solid sourcing to verify that Rush has changed her citizenship. We currently have no good evidence of that. Per WP:BLP, contentious poorly-sourced assertions must be removed at once. There is no ownership, there is merely enforcement of policy. Elizium23 (talk) 20:42, 7 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
"Rush changed citizenship", something I never said. Being dual citizen of Israel and United States isnt "changing citizenship", but attaining another. What I am saying is that there is no clear evidence or confirmation for her citizenship, this can go either way. Therefore, "Israeli-American" would be your best neutral term UNTIL a source CLEARLY says she is NOT an American citizen. PacificWarrior101 (talk) 07:55, 8 November 2014 (UTC)PacificWarrior101Reply
But not all the sources say so. Some say she is Israeli. They generally agree that she moved to the USA and works there. None say she changed citizenship, attained dual, naturalized, or anything of the sort. I am beginning to think that it should just be removed or clearly footnoted that it is dubious and the discrepancy documented. Elizium23 (talk) 18:32, 8 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

There is NOTHING that "all sources" say. They all differ, that's what it comes down to.PacificWarrior101 (talk) 21:38, 8 November 2014 (UTC)Pacific Warrior101Reply

Is there any evidence that she's been naturalized a U.S. citizen? One article that probably copied its wording from Wikipedia in calling her "Israeli-American" isn't proof. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 23:02, 8 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Discussion restarted

[edit]
I was unwittingly a part of this edit war - I reverted one edit because it replaced one version which was accompanied by a source with the other version (which I did not realize was disputed) with no source. Either version is fine with me, as long as it's accurate and sourced. If a sourced version is deemed inaccurate, the source should be replaced or disputed, not removed entirely with no explanation. --Fru1tbat (talk) 15:21, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Jewish

[edit]

It seems to me wrong to remove the religion field from the Infobox. What is the rationale behind this, besides "it is too much"? It is likewise wrong to remove its mention from the appropriate context and just stick it in an orphaned sentence. It makes for a choppy article. Please leave it alone. Categories

[edit]

@Alansohn, regarding this partial revert of my removal of several categories, please review WP:OCLOCATION, "And while the place of a person's birth may seem significant from the perspective of local studies, is rarely defining from the perspective of the individual." The place of a person's birth or residence is not defining; the existence of sources is not sufficient. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:08, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Additionally, Rush is not notable for being a model in New Jersey or Haifa. Per OCLOCATION: "Avoid sub-categorizing subjects by location if that location does not have any relevant bearing on the subjects' other characteristics. For example, quarterbacks' careers are not defined merely by the specific state that they once lived in (unless they played for a team within that state). The place of residence of parents and relatives is never defining and rarely notable." When she lived in New Jersey and Haifa, she was a child. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:11, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Voorts, to a large extent, I agree with portions of your analysis of WP:OCLOCATION, in that we have often gone overboard in creating categories for intersections of locations and professions and adding them obsessively to articles. Some of Wikipedia's most prolific editors seem to do nothing but parsing categories into ever finer overlaps, and there seems to be broad consensus that these intersection categories are appropriate. I disagree with the nature of the categories for places where sources consistently describe the individual's connection to a specific place, especially as to where someone ends up living when they end up becoming notable is no less contingent than the place where they were born and grew up.
There is a vast middle ground between adding a category to every article for every combination of person, place of residence and profession on the one hand, and having none.
The two -- and only two -- categories I reinserted are a middle ground to either extreme, both of which I think are problematic. If you want to remove the word models and make it Category:People from Haifa, I would have no objection. Alansohn (talk) 07:58, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think you're misunderstanding what a "defining" characteristic is. There's no middle ground here. We don't categorize people based on their place of birth/childhood residence except in very rare cases. A C-list actress is not that rare case. voorts (talk/contributions) 13:25, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
    Just to note, I've requested a third opinion. voorts (talk/contributions) 21:12, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

lens RESPONSE TO THIRD OPINION REQUEST

Alansohn, your arguments are not entirely unpersuasive, but I feel a lot of opinion seeping into your contentions. Your arguments would be better-made at a broader RfC asking to redefine the standard of inclusion of place-of-birth categories within WP:OCLOCATION. Otherwise, is it your contention that Rush is "commonly and consistently" defined by her PoB? You also refer to a "broad consensus" regarding inclusion but do not show this consensus. I realize what you're suggesting, but, as I'm sure you very well know, the onus has been and remains on you to show why this content should be included, and vague assertions of sweeping consensus is not good enough. Regardless, unless you are able to show why these categories are "defining," I must agree with voorts.  — MWFwiki (talk) 04:57, 29 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Alansohn: I intend to remove the categories if you hvae no further objections. voorts (talk/contributions) 02:14, 31 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Voorts, while I do have further objections, it's simply not worth bothering to argue about the removal of categories in a single article for what you call a C-list actress. It appears to me -- based on seeing the real-world editing of actual articles by the contributors who edit them based on descriptions in reliable sources, add categories and navigate across articles using those categories -- that an overwhelming percentage of editors disagree with the current wording of WP:OCLOCATION and your interpretation thereof. It seems a far better use of time to correct Wikipedia:Overcategorization to codify the consensus that is embodied in this common practice. Alansohn (talk) 07:15, 31 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
that an overwhelming percentage of editors disagree with the current wording of WP:OCLOCATION and your interpretation thereof. I think the majority of editors haven't read OCLOCATION and don't realize that "people from X" categories don't apply just because a person lived there briefly in their childhood (e.g., Rush and her connection to NJ). In any event, unless the guideline is changed, you should follow it. voorts (talk/contributions) 12:57, 31 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you truly feel this way I would again urge you to open an RfC at OCLOCATION or elsewhere and clear the matter up  — MWFwiki (talk) 23:13, 31 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

This reminds me of the endless category wars we once had over Nikola Tesla. A persistent problem with categorization with Location categories is the fact that while a person being born in a particular place may not be all that important (and therefore “defining”) for the subject, it is VERY important (and therefore “defining”) for those who identify with the place. Editors from a particular place want to define a famous person as “one of US” (or an infamous person as “one of THEM”). Blueboar (talk) 17:51, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Aren't those debates why we have the guidelines as written? voorts (talk/contributions) 18:02, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Revisiting the categories

[edit]

This edit from User:Thedarkknightli is the very model for how real-world editors actually add categories to articles. I'm sure that there are editors who believe that we are obligated to follow a literal interpretation of an editing guideline, but the people out there editing articles seem to agree that these are exactly the kinds of categories that should be used in articles; this is consensus in action. Alansohn (talk) 18:06, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Again, editors misapplying a guideline (that was developed by consensus processes) is not evidence of a changed consensus. If you want to change OCLOCATION, try starting a discussion at VPP or the guideline talk page. voorts (talk/contributions) 18:08, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Well, I was not aware of this thread when I reverted voorts's edit. However, given this source (in which OR stated that she "had a Jersey accent on top of my Israeli one"), I personally think we should keep at least one New Jersey-related category. Thedarkknightli (talk) 18:16, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
That's not how categorization works. Please read OCLOCATION. voorts (talk/contributions) 18:24, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Consensus is based on what real editors do, not what they're told to do. That is EXACTLY how categorization works among real editors. Alansohn (talk) 16:32, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
We have PAGs for a reason. This guideline in particular (and lots of things regarding categorization) has been subject of lots of discussion. Nothing in that guideline says we categorize a person in a "person from NJ" category because they said they said in an interview that they still have part of their NJ accent. If you want to allow this type of categorization, you should go to VPP or the OC talk page and open a discussion. voorts (talk/contributions) 16:37, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello again guys, I have just informed WT:OC. The thread is WT:OC#Regarding OCLOCATION. Thedarkknightli (talk) 16:35, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Thedarkknightli: The idea was to start a broader discussion at another noticeboard, not to continue the discussion here. voorts (talk/contributions) 17:07, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK then, I have just opened a discussion at WP:VPP. The thread is WP:VPP#WP:OCLOCATION. Thedarkknightli (talk) 05:48, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
