Proposed summary for technical prose

[edit]

I've been using Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental large language model to create summaries for the most popular articles with {{Technical}} templates. This article, OLED, has such a template above the entire article. Here is the paragraph summary at grade 5 reading level which Gemini 2.5 Pro suggested:

An OLED is like a tiny light bulb made from special layers of material. When electricity passes through these layers, they glow and create light. This technology is used to make the screens in many TVs, computer monitors, and smartphones. OLED screens can be very thin, bright, and sometimes even flexible or bendy. They are known for showing very dark blacks and vivid colors, making pictures look clear and colorful.

While I have read and may have made some modifications to that summary, I am not going to add it to the article because I want other editors to review, revise if appropriate, and add it instead. This is an experiment with a few dozen articles initially to see how these suggestions are received, and after a week or two, I will decide how to proceed. Thank you for your consideration. I am retracting this and the other LLM-generated suggestions due to clear negative consensus at the Village Pump. I will be posting a thorough postmortem report in mid-April to the source code release page. Thanks to all who commented on the suggestions both negatively and positively, and especially to those editors who have manually addressed the overly technical cleanup issue on six, so far, of the 68 articles where suggestions were posted. Proposed Additions to Misc. Application

[edit]

Platinum Porphyrin is an interesting compound that can be used to do a couple of different things like biometrics and night vision. I want to add this section to the miscellaneous application. I have found some papers on the matter, and think that it could be an interesting application for OLED, that diversifies the content so the purposes are not limited to types of screens. "LEDs are different than the OLEDs as they also do not emit their own light, as they are backlit similar to LCDs"

[edit]

This sentence from the article is absurd (and false). Of course LEDs *do* emit their own light; they are semiconductor diodes that turn electricity into light. One cited reference turns out to be referring to "LED-backlit LCD displays", not "LEDs".

This needs a cleanup at least at the paragraph containing this sentence, and perhaps throughout the article if other parts of it are also muddling LED-backlit LCDs with LED displays. Gnuish (talk) 07:35, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for noticing. Who the heck wrote this stuff... I guess what the original author is trying to convey is "the LCDs in backlit LED configuration don't emit light", or something. 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 09:05, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
