Not by Alexander the Great

[edit]

A fortress overlooking Nurata is often associated in local legends with Alexander the Great (4th century B.C.). However, there is no reliable historical or archaeological evidence proving that Alexander founded the city or the fortress. Most historians agree that Nurata already existed before Alexander’s campaign in Central Asia and that the fortifications may have been rebuilt, strengthened, or reused during later periods, including the Hellenistic era.
