I am not sure about the part in the introduction that tides are considered nonliear if they deviate from a pure sinusidal wave. Consider for example a place with both strong diurnal and semi-diurnal tides. This is not one pure sine, but sum of two different frequencies. However, you need no nonlinear tides to find this.
