Nesmith (ness mith) (or those from Georgia origin capitolized the "s" and pronounced the "e" as a long vowel (knee smith), NeSmith) derived from the Naismith/Naysmyth families of Scotland/Ireland. Professor James Naismith founded the sport of basketball. It appears that the original immigrants arrived in New England during the late 1700s and early 1800s.
