This is notable and should not be removed
[edit]Yes it is a stub but it can be expanded. This should not be removed for lack of notability as it is a program with high install rates and would be included in any Unix encyclopedia Omi745 (talk) 18:57, 10 November 2022 (UTC)
If you think that one of the roles of Wikipedia is to give people a place to find information
[edit]So, it isn't quite as detailed, or relevant, as the Cyp450 3A4 protein, but that doesn't mean it isn't a page that provides people with useful information. It is a little program that does a few things. I think you will find most notable Linux software and utilities are like that. If you Google "screenfetch" it still pulls in the long-deleted (and mistakenly, looking at the musings of the three wizards who decided that Wikipedia users should not be able to look up a minor, but popular, tool.
The fact that you don't use it, or even run Linux/Bash doesn't mean it isn't relevant to people who are looking for what it is.
Given it is a common, albeit hardly critical, script run by many users of Linux it should be retained. Moreover, there is a substantial culture associated with these scripts and I think Wikipedia needs to describe the software, what role it plays, maybe even how it was written, and leave the popularity contest to Redit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DrKC MD (talk • contribs) 08:01, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think one of the major problems with a page like this is that it's being targeted quite a bit. Some just coming out of nowhere just to edit the page to remove content without any consensus being agreed upon about the idea of removing or not. Literally sockpocket accounts with one person who just insults people that revert their edit. PinkBunnyBun (talk) 00:00, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Discussion for why the page should have content removed or not.
[edit]While the content on this page will likely never be removed, I advise those looking into doing that to consider explaining why it should be removed. Because the edit wars have shown that people need to talk about it instead of just deleting it, I don't think the content about other fetch tools should be removed. If anything, It's comparable to vandalism with how it's removed. Also the person who did that previously was a proven user of sockpuppet accounts which shows it was done in bad faith. PinkBunnyBun (talk) 19:07, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- I propose a compromise and say we do something like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Neofetch&diff=prev&oldid=1186049561
- I find that most of the projects aren't notable enough to be mentioned, but I still think it's important to note that some alternatives have been created. TakodaNotDakota (talk) 16:44, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- It will likely not resolve any future edit wars, if I'm being honest. Too many would otherwise revert it back. My advice is to likely just leave it alone for now. Also it excludes the much more updated hyfetch fork, which was made to provide more updates to the codebase of neofetch. PinkBunnyBun (talk) 23:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Mention screenfetch
[edit]I've known neofetch forever. I've just learned (thanks to the "Other implementations" section) there are about two dozens other implementations. Nice. However, the article is missing an important mention of screenfetch, which, I believe, is the original fetch that spawn all these functional clones to different extends. According to the article, neofetch is 7 years old. screenfetch, however, dates back to 2010, making it 13 years old. Hot basket (talk) 21:25, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Please change verb tense in first sentence from past to present tense i.e. "was" to "is".
Per Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style (all emphasis below mine)
By default, write articles in the present tense, including those covering works of fiction ... and products or works that have been discontinued.
Additionally an example is given on the MoS page for a topic similar to Neofetch (a software program)
Flappy Bird is a mobile game developed by Vietnamese video game artist and programmer Dong Nguyen (not Flappy Bird was a mobile game).

discontinued?
[edit]how is it discontinued if its still being used on most (if not all) linux distros? 2A0A:EF40:833:3901:DDA4:6C85:7057:3CD7 (talk) 23:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- The development of Neofetch was discontinued after the dev locked the page and stopped releasing any future updates. PinkBunnyBun (talk) 05:13, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

change "hyfetch, a updated fork of neofetch written in Shell and Python with pride flags' colors." to "hyfetch, a updated fork of neofetch written in Shell, Python and Rust with pride flags' colors."

Operating system
[edit]in the section for "operating system" y'all mentioned: "Linux, macOS, BSD, Windows, iOS, Android, GNU Hurd, Haiku, IRIX, MINIX, Solaris" why is windows mentioned if its written in BASH, are we refering to WSL? Kapikaine (talk) 03:50, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Fetch Scripts
[edit]Firstly, under the screenshots section, it claims that fastfetch is a fork of neofetch, which does not seem to be the case looking at the cited page for fastfetch under other implementations.
Next, the "other implementations" section, in it's name, implies that these are other implementations of some kind of 'protocol' that neofetch is an implementation of, or that they are identical in usage, so I think these are more "alternatives" rather than "other implementations". This is a bit of a nit-pick though.
But considering the mention of "other implementations", and how the screenshots section contains fastfetch as well as neofetch, I wonder if this should become a general page about fetch scripts, like neofetch and fastfetch, or if such a page is necessary. Yallex82 (talk) 05:24, 3 October 2025 (UTC)

Dumb reverting
[edit]User:Pipe058, you first falsely claimed that I did not explain my edit. Rather than admit your error and move on, you've now reverted again, apparently because you now want to dispute the reasons I gave. You've quoted a guideline that specifically supports my edit. So explain yourself please. ~2026-22919-30 (talk) 19:34, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-22919-30 First, the only reason you provided was "policy violating content", without actually providing a policy.
- Second, I don't see the guidelines I've provided support your edits, as in WP:GALLERY it states "A gallery section may be appropriate in some Wikipedia articles if a collection of images can illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text or individual images."
- Lastly, I don't appreciate the comments you've left about my reversions on this and other articles, I am not here to argue with other editors, only to uphold the guidelines and policies for articles.
- If you can provide a reason for why the content goes against these, or other guidelines, I would appreciate it. Thanks! pipe058Talk * Contribs 19:41, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- What aspect of the topic do you think a selection of random screenshots is illustrating? Why do you think a long list of "other implementations" has any value? ~2026-22919-30 (talk) 19:55, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- This is quite clearly WP:BKFIP. I've blocked their most recent TA.-- Ponyobons mots 20:10, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- While I think these screenshots illustrate the program itself, I will agree as one screenshot in the infobox is enough for a simplistic program like this. As for the "other implementations" section, this could show the variants/uses of this program in other notable uses, but can be debated and I won't bother adding this back in as it isn't quite as notable as a thought they were (as none of them have their own pages). Thanks for fixing this page, and I apologize for my indiscriminate use of warnings on your page to get my point across. Thanks! pipe058Talk * Contribs 20:59, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Image_galleries "Some subjects easily lend themselves to image-heavy articles for which image galleries are suitable, such as plants (e.g., Lily), fashion (e.g., Wedding dress), and the visual arts (e.g., Oil painting). Others do not."
- On certain article, where many variants of a thing exist, using a gallery is constructive. This would certainly be an example, as different colour themes, and operating system art are shown by neofetch. The other implementations section is also very useful.
