Pronunciation

[edit]

I am wondering on what basis the phonetics for the name of the island is given as [naˈβitʃi]. This gives the stress on the initial syllable - Fijian names and words carry the stress on the penultimate mora - and since [i] is one mora, this places the stress on the 2nd, not the first syllable. And despite the comment in the article on Fijian language, "ti" is not commonly pronounced [tʃi], but [ti]. I have lived among Fijians for the last 4 years, and have yet to hear this pronunciation for words and names including the "ti" combination. Ptilinopus (talk) 02:14, 14 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
