Removal of content
[edit]@Scope creep: You've just removed a large amount of content from this article and I'm a bit unclear as to why. The citations to X and Instagram supporting the pronunciation of Nalin Haley's first name, I believe, are acceptable per WP:BLPSELFPUB as they are uncontroversial claims about which the subject of the article would be an authority, and mention of Nalin Haley's birth date is removed from the lede (though not the body), with a supporting citation removed. Again, these citations are from social media, but they are from a source that is an authority on this specific fact, and I don't really understand why they were removed.
I understand your reasoning for this next thing more, but a number of claims are removed from the article (or newly unsourced) because they were cited to an article in UnHerd by Sohrab Ahmari. At RSN, contributors seem generally predisposed to considering it an unreliable or at least biased source (see discussions at archive 410 and archive 493). I tend to mainly agree, in that I broadly wouldn't cite it if a better source was available, and I would be cautious in citing it for factual claims (some editors specifically note its stance on gender-related topics and issues), but its use in this article is for pretty basic claims about Nalin Haley's life and what he believes, often attributed with direct quotes from Haley (the author seemingly conducted an interview with him). I can understand viewing UnHerd as a broadly dubious source, but I think its use here is appropriate and due. LivelyRatification (talk) 09:15, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @LivelyRatification: How goes it? Sorry I took it to Afd. I misread it. Unherd is still coming up as potentially unreliable. There is no clear consensus on it at RSN, so I needed to remove it. I can't use a value judgement on something that is potentially unreliable. If you don't seen any summary of consensus at RSN for a source, never use it. He seems to be notable and the article is much better state. On the social media links, articles only get one social media type in the body only. Certainly WP:BLPSELFPUB applies here, but its only for the simplest content, as you know and only one social media type. Having a huge block of social media sources for a WP:BLP, especially at the beginning of the article, really doesn't sit well with most folk, particularly with reviewers. WP:BLP states Be very firm about the use of high-quality, reliable sources.. The man is notable and clearly of the moment, so I've no doubt you will expand it in a timely manner. scope_creepTalk 09:51, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
Ethnicity in lede
[edit]To avoid breaking the three revert rule I'm going to start this discussion here, but @~2026-11737-23: I disagree quite strongly with your repeated additions of "Indian-American" to the description of Nalin Haley in the lede. MOS:ETHNICITY defines pretty clearly when a person's ethnic origin should be mentioned in an article, and Haley being of Indian ethnic background is not relevant to his notability, in my view. It is a fact about him, and perhaps one worth including in the article, but it is not why he is notable. You have explained in your comments that you disagree with this, so I'll lay out my point here. Haley is notable both for his political views and for being the son of Nikki Haley, an American politician. Part of this friction is that the elder Haley is a more moderate Republican, while Nalin is further to the right. Perhaps some of the factors at play here owe to his ethnic background -- isn't it weird that a non-white person is so extreme on immigration, and the like -- but he is born in the USA and has lived there his entire life.
It is a factor to his notability, but if nothing about him were changed but for his ethnicity, he would still be notable in the Wikipedia sense (see WP:Notability). I think that the carve-out in MOS:ETHNICITY for "unless relevant to the subject's notability
" is meant to describe cases where a person's ethnic background is inherent to their notability, and even then one would still want to stick to the country they are most strongly associated with, because there is an (unfortunate) connotation that hyphenating one's ethnicity makes them less of a (insert nationality here). I apologise for my curt edit summary stating that Donald Trump would not be a German-American, but I do believe quite strongly that if you have a political figure born in America, the son of an American governor, most notable for his views on American politics and relation to said governor, MOS:ETHNICITY says pretty firmly that you describe this person as an American, no matter their ethnic background. --LivelyRatification (talk) 08:21, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-11737-23: Please stop adding "Indian-American" to the lede of this article. It is a violation of MOS:ETHNICITY. It clearly states that
The opening paragraph should usually provide context for that which made the person notable. In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory where the person is currently a national or permanent resident; or, if the person is notable mainly for past events, where the person was such when they became notable.
- Nalin Haley is not notable for being specifically of Indian ethnicity, he is notable for his political views and for being the son of an American governor. I believe that your edits are unconstructive and constitute edit warring. LivelyRatification (talk) 01:09, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
