Merge Proposal

I don't believe Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh has sufficient notability independent of Kneecap to warrant an independent article. I think this article should be merged back into the Kneecap article. CeltBrowne (talk) 22:08, 22 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Delete and redirect. Not independently notable, only notable in the context of the band. Not sure there's anything to merge. Canterbury Tail talk 00:04, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
I believe getting charged with a terrorism charge by the UK warrants him his own page. He's all over the news. Afonso Dimas Martins (talk) 07:52, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Delete and redirect. Not notable other than as a band member. --Ekaterina Colclough (talk)  Preceding undated comment added 14:09, 23 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Delete and redirect, same reasons as above. Mind the gap 1 (talk) 10:59, 30 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
The Kneecap summation is incorrect. Liam is his given name. Mo Chara is his stage name and yes, football fans are calling him out independent of the band to "Free Mo". Leave it separate. 142.198.96.133 (talk) 12:04, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Delete and redirect Not notable as separate from the band. The only other thing he has done that is separate is the current charge, which is usually a bad reason to create a page for anyone at all. For reference, though I know it's a completely different type of music, none of One Direction were allowed pages until they had solo careers. Unknown Temptation (talk) 14:35, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Keep – with the caveat until at least the 18 June 2025 or shortly thereafter (say 3 to 4 days), i.e., the date of his hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court per the BBC. If it results in a conviction, then the event itself would warrant keeping the page; otherwise, it should be deleted. Lf8u2 (talk) 22:25, 3 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Delete and redirect for the reasons given. Gatepainter (talk) 22:16, 5 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Wait until after terror charge is decided. EvansHallBear (talk) 20:32, 20 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wait the next court hearing on 20 August will likely determine whether he receives a conviction or not. But even if he doesn't, the event does seem significant enough on its own in terms of notability. Paprikaiser (talk) 22:05, 20 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wait, while I'm seeing potential BLP1E issues, merging back to Kneecap doesn't necessarily make sense at this point, it could well give undue weight to recentism. There is otherwise WP:SIGCOV it seems, as well as significant interest per views. CNC (talk) 23:31, 20 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wait I think the recentism comment above is factor in keeping the articles separate for now at least. Lajmmoore (talk) 17:09, 28 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Comment Any updates on the charges? I lean towards merge, but there is some notability for separation. Metallurgist (talk) 22:44, 11 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
He's due back in court on 20 August. Paprikaiser (talk) 20:44, 12 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Wait, WP:1E, which is the terror charge. 151.76.51.46 (talk) 11:46, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Political activism and controversies

[edit]

If the article is not merged, suggest that section is renamed 'Political activism and legal issues' to reflect content better and as per WP:CRIT. Jontel (talk) 09:22, 24 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Real name

[edit]

According to sources, he ”has been charged under the name Liam O'Hanna”, which would indicate that his real/official name is Liam O’Hanna, not Liam Ó hAnnaidh. While he commonly uses the Irish form of his name, alongside his stage name, his official name should be mentioned in the lede. --Qwerty12302 (talk | contributions) 10:07, 19 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh is his real name, and the version used by the English court is merely an anglicised form. This does not show that it is his legal birth name. UK courts often anglicise Irish Gaelic names, a practice that arose because of the Administration of Justice (Language) Act 1737, which required all court proceedings to be conducted in English. A provision to repeal the 1737 Act was included as part of the introduction of an Irish Language Act in 2022, though this repeal has not yet been enacted . I do not mind if the anglicised name appears in the lead, but it should be made clear that it is only an anglicisation and not the name he was born with or identifies with. There is one example of this in MOS:FIRSTBIO. Paprikaiser (talk) 21:30, 2 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Even if his name is legally Liam O'Hanna, he goes by Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, so that's what his name should be listed as. I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone mostly working around MOS:DEADNAME, which has slightly different rules than normal and obviously wouldn't apply here, but the way I read MOS guidelines on names tells me Wikipedia should give more weight to what the subject calls themself as opposed to their legal name. All that said, I similarly have no objection to O'Hanna's inclusion, just not at the first name in the lead. Taffer😊💬(she/they) 21:39, 2 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Being from Belfast, United Kingdom where English is the official language, his name is Liam O'Hanna. Like many nationalists (and/or republicans) from Northern Ireland, he has chosen to adopt an Irish version of his name in a vain attempt to appear oppressed by the British, something that he is also doing with his legal defence in that he is forcing the courts to pay for an Irish interpreter, then leaving the court and speaking to his "fans" in his ear-hurting lower-socioeconomic west-Belfast-English; because he speaks English. English will be his first language because he is from Belfast, United Kingdom. These are the facts. Ryanadamsfan (talk) 19:01, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thats actually somewhat hilarious of a troll even if Im very much not a fan of him. Metallurgist (talk) 00:39, 23 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Low-effort trolling aside, I just wanted to note that I came across this article today which clearly states that his real name is Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, and that he was initially charged under the anglicised version of his name, which was subsequently corrected. Paprikaiser (talk) 21:37, 25 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a source that directly states he did this? I can only find some that imply it and the source video is too long, and thats probably OR anyway. Metallurgist (talk) 14:46, 30 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Shouldnt this be titled Mo Chara anyway? It looks like the Irish version of his name is more common at 280k to 91k. I think it would be reasonable to put both English and Irish. And can someone put up an IPA for pronunciation? Metallurgist (talk) 00:39, 23 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Native Tongue

[edit]

The article states he is fluent in the Irish language, which implies that is his mother tongue. He speaks English as his first language. This should be mentioned in the article for the avoidance of confusion. Ryanadamsfan (talk) 19:04, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

I really doubt there's any confusion that he doesn't speak English considering the lead even notes that Kneecap raps in both languages, but I don't think it'd be particularly controversial to change
He is fluent in Irish
+
He is fluent in Irish and English
Taffer😊💬(she/they) 19:09, 20 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Saying someone is "fluent" in a language does not necessarily mean it is their mother tongue. It only indicates proficiency, without clarifying how or when the language was learned. I came across this article, which notes that all members are native Irish speakers, though this one distinguishes Móglaí Bap by stating his first language was Irish. This suggests that, for Mo Chara, he likely grew up with both languages simultaneously. Either way, Irish is one of his first languages, so it is certainly one of his mother tongues as well. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidhMo Chara – It seems Mo Chara is the more common name for him by leaps and bounds. Google shows far more results for Mo Chara. Wikinav is not working for me, so I cant cite that. Additionally, the Kneecap page did not include their real names until 23 November 2024. Proposing due to PIA, and arguably Troubles. Metallurgist (talk) 19:10, 25 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • Weak support. I'm generally in agreement that Mo Chara as the stage name is most commonly known, however the criminal charges does muddy the waters abit (as legal names are nearly always included when reporting on formal charges). Generally I've seen balanced coverage of "aka Mo Chara" and "who performs under the stage name Mo Chara", meaning generally that both are (at least now) commonly used and widespread by reliable sources, so would be OK as the current title. The advantage with Mo Chara is that this he has been known for much longer under this name, so it avoids the current title becoming outdated per recentism, even if the subject has only become notable since approximately the charges. CNC (talk) 15:51, 26 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
We can still have his legal name on the page, its just that the page title would be Mo Chara. Metallurgist (talk) 14:41, 30 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
    @Metallurgist of course. CNC (talk) 22:24, 30 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
I checked a few random celebrity pages, and the usual format seems to be: "[birth name] (born [date of birth]), known professionally as [stage name]..." Paprikaiser (talk) 19:07, 31 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yep, that is what I have seen as well. Metallurgist (talk) 20:03, 31 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • Support It seems to me by far the common way he is known for what he is known (his musical activity). I do not believe the coverage of legal issues changes that. --cyclopiaspeak! 10:21, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

On 26 September 2025, During the decision of the terror charges against him were thrown out following a technical error in the way the charge against him was brought.[1] Ukrain4Pal (talk) 13:35, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Toast1454TC 14:29, 26 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

O'Hanna

[edit]

Before we have an edit war, lets achieve a consensus whether Liam O'Hanna should be included in some form. I am leaning yes because it has been mentioned in quite a number of sources, was in the court records (if incorrectly). As I understand it, he Gaelicised his name as part of the Irish language revival movement, but I would have to look into that. Either way, I think there is enough coverage to merit passing inclusion. Metallurgist (talk) 21:03, 1 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

At the very least it warrants inclusion in the infobox in some way, whether it's birth name or other names or something else. Though he should stay referred to as Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh in the lead and Ó hAnnaidh throughout the rest of the article. Taffer😊💬(she/they) 21:18, 1 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I agree altho I think Chara should be used. That seems to be the standard for this kind of thing. ←Metallurgist (talk) 20:50, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
"Mo Chara" in full maybe, just calling him a friend over and over would be a little odd. LaffyTaffer💬(she/they) 22:01, 30 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am fine either way. Ice Cube uses Cube, which may or may not be standard, but thats what I looked at. ←Metallurgist (talk) 18:42, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Huh, I guess it boils down to preference then. I'm not a fan of that, but not enough to change it or kick up a fuss. LaffyTaffer💬(she/they) 18:44, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
