Messel Formation → Messel Pit – I see no reason why the page is currently titled "Messel Formation" when there are other terms within the literature that are far more commonly used to refer to the site, namely "Messel Pit" or "Messel Pit Fossil Site". Other sites, such as "Konservat-Lagerstätte Menat" & "Cerin Lagerstätte" had a similar change to Use Commonly Recognized Names (See: WP:UCRN). The movement of the page would be in line with both how the literature refers to the site, & how the site is commonly referred to within the public zeitgeist. Additionally, I don't believe there's any other names that could be confused with the new name. Montanoceratops (talk) 23:20, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Support Messel Formation is not separately notable from the Messel Pit (the formation is a hyperlocal maar deposit essentially coterminous with the pit itself), and Messel Pit is a much more common name to refer to the deposit. I note for completeness that Messel pit was formerly a separate article that was merged into this one in 2024, see Talk:Messel_pit#Proposal_to_merge_Messel_Formation_with_Messel_pit. In retrospect it seems the merge was the wrong way around. Hemiauchenia (talk) 23:41, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

- I don't really mind which title the article uses, and agree with the given reasoning, so Support. Geekgecko (talk) 02:54, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Similarly - no strong feelings about which of the two titles serves as main title and which as redirect. All good. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 06:42, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
