Page move to Mayo F.C.

[edit]

Hi folks,

I thought I'd start a discussion on this as I noticed there was a recent attempt at a page move. I had this page move on my own to-do list but @Supersaints2014 got there ahead of me.

I personally thought this was a straightforward page move and therefore did not need to be discussed. The club's full name is Mayo Football Club and as per the consistency guideline in WP:CRITERIA, the article should be titled Mayo F.C. using the common abbreviation for "football club."

I agree that the club itself excludes the periods in its own crest and therefore I think adding Mayo FC as a redirect to the page should be included in the move, but my interpretation is that it should not be the article title. @Guliolopez do you feel strongly enough about this that we need to open this up for consensus or can we revert back to Mayo F.C.?

Hi @ElfmanWriter. Thanks very much for opening this thread and for the ping. In terms of:
  • WP:RMUM. Yes, I restored the original title following the recent undiscussed move. I did this in line with the applicable guideline. Because, when @CeltBrowne originally created the article, I think they titled it correctly/reasonably based on the sources and guidelines.
  • WP:CRITERIA. The first (main?) part of the guideline suggests that "Article titles are based on how reliable English-language sources refer to the article's subject". As a significant majority (11x of 15?) of the sources use "Mayo FC", it seems to me that the title was/is consistent with this norm. (While 2x sources use "Mayo F.C." and 1x uses "Mayo Football Club", compared to the volume which use "Mayo FC", neither seems to be the WP:COMMONNAME.)
  • WP:CONSISTENCY. While consistency is a laudable goal, I'm not sure it should "trump" other considerations. Also, even if consistency were a primary goal, I note that even if we compare to the titles of other/similar club articles, "FC" (no punctuation) is fairly common. In, for example, Category:Association football clubs established in 2023 (one of the few club categories that the Mayo FC article lies within), there are far more titles which use "FC" (~50x of 118 members?) than use "F.C." (~25x of 118). Suggesting that the current title meets both COMMONNAME and CONSISTENT(?)
