In the article, it says that Matt became addicted to pain medication after his bout with meningitis. This is not how his drug addiction started. After he recovered, he found himself behind in his medical studies and working long hours to catch up. A fellow med student offers him amphetamines to help keep him awake and alert. Initially reluctant, he finds himself dependent on them for both studying and working at the hospital.
