Other languages

It would be interesting to compare how insect's perception is reflected in other languages. For example, David (in Kazakh), monk grass hopper (in Tatar), praying man (in Russian) and so on. Ilya-42 (talk) 07:52, 11 February 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for discussing. This might find a place in the 'In culture' section, if a reliable source (presumably a scholar in this case) has discussed the matter. The rules on WP:SYNTH (WP:OR) forbid our assembling such a thing based only on names; further, English Wikipedia is not concerned directly with foreign names, nor is it a dictionary (WP:NOTDICT). Unclear sentence

One sentence reads as follows:

"The vernacular plural "mantises" (used in this article) was originally confined largely to the US, with "mantids" predominantly used as the plural in the UK and elsewhere, until the family Mantidae was further split in 2002; at present, only some 75 out of 430 known genera are mantids, the rest are in 28 other families, and therefore no longer "mantids"."

Unfortunately, this sentence never states which word "mantises" or "mantids" might be considered to be the plural of.
