County vs Region

[edit]
  • There is some discussion on this topic at Talk:Manchester/Archive_12#Framing_of_Greater_Manchester_in_the_lede. I stand by what I said there: "Manchester is a city in Greater Manchester" sounds so obviously awkward, to the point of being distractingly absurd ("London is a city in Greater London", "Bristol is a city in the Greater Bristol Area"), that I think common sense must override consistency. I reiterate my previous suggestion: if we must have Greater Manchester rather than the region in the lede, let's at least say, "Manchester is the city and innermost borough that forms the core of Greater Manchester, England". ―Kilopylae (talk) 15:22, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree with this sentiment, it sounds bad but keeps getting reverted. A rewrite of the section as suggested above may be the best course of action. "Manchester is the city and innermost borough that forms the core of Greater Manchester, England" might be a bit wordy though. Maybe something like "Manchester is a city in northwestern England and the principal borough of Greater Manchester." or the like. You're right though in that we should focus on Manchester's purpose in the region rather than just saying that it's there. feedmepaperr (talk) 17:49, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I like "Manchester is a city in northwestern England and the principal borough of Greater Manchester" a lot. My only question is whether "principal" is the right word. —Kilopylae (talk) 10:40, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I personally strongly support the county names. UK regions are purely used for statistical purposes at the moment and hold no geographic or ceremonial value. Additionally, there is a difference between North West England and north-west England. JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 19:36, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I changed it to "Manchester is a city in Greater Manchester, located in North West England" almost three hours ago, and it seems to have stuck so far. I think North West England is helpful to people who do not live in England, like me. It tells me that Manchester is not south of London, not on the east coast and not west of Wales, etc. I knew all that already, but a lot of people don't. Neutron Three (talk) 20:01, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I just posted a compromise lede sentence. Let's see how long it lasts. Neutron Three (talk) 17:06, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

How about "Greater Manchester is a city in the eponymous county of Greater Manchester in North West England".? JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 19:37, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
That is pretty much what I changed it to, and it has not been reverted after a couple hours, so maybe it will stay that way. I did not include the eponymous part, because it is unnecessary and self-evident. Neutron Three (talk) 19:52, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
As I say above, I prefer Feedmepaper's suggestion ("Manchester is a city in northwestern England and the principal borough of Greater Manchester"), but I think that if we do go with JacobTheRox's sentence, we must include "eponymous". It makes the sentence less distractingly malformed by lampshading the fact that Greater Manchester is an extension of Manchester. —Kilopylae (talk) 10:40, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
And also many people talk about Manchester meaning Greater Manchester because they are, in effect, talking about the general metropolitan area including places such as both Ashtons and Salford. I know many people who say they are from Manchester, including for example (though not personally) Andy Burnham himself, who live in the wider contiguous area. Therefore the article on Manchester should set out from the first line that this is part of a wider, eponymous, region. JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 11:35, 23 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hey hey everyone, just coming back to say that I changed the lede a few days ago to "Manchester is the city at the centre of the eponymous county of Greater Manchester in North West England", and this seems to be relatively stable. I'm happy with this if everyone else is. —Kilopylae (talk) 15:06, 9 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Assuming you are asking "where is the old city of Manchester that is buried under Manchester", do you mean Mamucium? KJP1 (talk) 07:51, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
