Mala Rohan → Malaya RohanMalaya Rohan – User:Andriyrussu has repeatedly moved this page to Mala Rohan with no explanation or edit summary provided. I reverted their edits based on WP:COMMONNAME and a lack of any reasonable explanation (nor an explanation at all). I'm not going to move it back right away as that would most likely be edit warring, so I'll propose it here first: The page need to be moved from Mala Rohan to Malaya Rohan. This is the terminology used by reliale sources like BBC, The Atlantic, and France24, among many others. The page Torture of Russian soldiers in Mala Rohan should likewise be moved. • Oppose. The question seems to be whether to use a latin transcription from the Russian-language name or a latin transcription from the Ukrainian-language name. The closest guide in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Ukrainian places) seems to be The names of cities should be transliterated into Latin letters with the Ukrainian national system, e.g. write Donetsk, not Donets'k (BGN/PCGN). Generally, do not use transliterations derived from Russian names for cities of regional significance in Ukraine, e.g. write Lviv, not Lvov. While Мала Рогань (uk) is not of regional significance, the default is recommended to be to use Ukrainian, not Russian. The Russian language name is Малая Рогань, including the я = "ya" or "ia" part. Openstreetmap currently agrees with the uk.Wikipedia and ru.Wikipedia on the respective (cyrillic) spellings. Мала Рогань is legally part of Ukraine, it's physically controlled by the Ukrainian state, and our current naming convention seems to consider using Ukrainian names to be uncontroversial; special justification is needed if a Russian-language latin-transcripted spelling is to be used. While the English-language media usage appears to be common so far, this is most likely a problem of insensitivity to the freely mixed usage of Russian and Ukrainian, and laziness in double-checking information. Many locals may switch and mix without even realising it, and their priority in talking to international media would have been on other aspects than trying to remember which language they're talking in. • Oppose  Mala Rohan seems to be slightly more common (15, 11, 0), but as it is close and there are only 26 Google Books results in total, it can be argued that there is no WP:COMMONNAME, and therefore we should romanize the Ukrainian name per WP:UKR anyway. —Michael Z. 18:52, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
