The current article seems to define "maintenance mode" in terms of software life-cycle, but there are other uses of the term. For example, the Drupal CMS uses the term "maintenance mode" to refer to a state in which a website is purposely made unavailable to end-users, in a graceful way, while scheduled maintenance tasks take place, such as upgrades or fixes. The term is naturally also used for the Drupal feature (or other software features) that allow a site to be put into "maintenance mode", which could be compared to the classic "under construction" mode. I suspect that most Drupal developers would recognize that terminology, e.g.:
