The page currently states that North Macedonia was known until 2019 as the Republic of Macedonia.
The United Nations registered, formal & actual correct name, was the "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (FYROM).
Please adjust misleading name.
This is about providing precise and factual information. Cafaas (talk) 10:26, 16 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think, that the right to do, is to specify that the term "Macedonia" officially refers to the whole region. After we could add the three other circumstances. I suggest that as the proper: Macedonia (Macedonian: Македонија, romanized: Makedonija, Greek: Μακεδονία, romanized: Makedonía, Bulgarian: Македония, romanized: Makedoniya) most commonly refers to: Macedonia (region), a geographic and historical region that today includes parts of six Balkan countries (see map) It also may refers to: Macedonia (ancient kingdom), a kingdom in Greek antiquity Macedonia (Greece), a former administrative region, spanning today three administrative subdivisions of northern Greece North Macedonia, a country in southeastern Europe, named until 2019 as «Republic of Macedonia» (I also suggest «the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia» (F.Y.R.O.M.), but a problematic instruction (MOS:MAC) is against it for some reason). The reason I suggest that, is that I think that first of all, the right think to do is to declare that the term "Macedonia" in the broad sense refers to the region. Then, is it not a bit strange, that the only "Macedonia" which according to the signed agreements, but also based on the sources from 2018 onwards, is first in line? Greek Macedonia is officially called geographic region of "Macedonia" and it is almost identical with the ancient land of Macedonia. The ancient kingdom of Macedonia is also called "Macedonia" plainly. In contrast, the only ones who today refer to North Macedonia as simply "Macedonia" are those who embrace the political ideology of "ethnic Macedonian" nationalism. And for them we still leave it on this list. Nowadays, North Macedonia is the last of all of them which one would refer to as Macedonia (without the designation "North"). Other people disagree. Type "Macedonia" into https://google.com. "North Macedonia (Country in the Balkans)" appears first in the suggested searches (analogous to WP's disamibiguation), followed by "Macedonia (Ancient kingdom)". A search for "Macedonia" on https://bbc.com/search shows (disregarding several pages' worth of North Macedonia football game results) the country profile for North Macedonia first. https://britannica.com first suggested search is "Macedonia (North Macedonia)" followed by "Macedonia (region, Europe)", "Macedonia (ancient kingdom, Europe)" and "Macedonia (region, Greece)". Similar issue: What explains the order of the languages for the word Macedonia? The work derives from the Greek word Μακεδονία. Shouldn't then Greek be first? Open Free Eye (talk) 20:57, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Jingiby, you just reverted my edit in which I added Ottoman Macedonia as a bullet point under the "historical entities" header. I thought that this might be an improvement but it seems I was mistaken, and I appreciate the feedback. I understand your reasoning ("Such separate entity called Macedonia, did not exist"), but I find the absence of any mention of Ottoman rule a flaw. Do you agree that Ottoman Macedonia could be mentioned under the "Other geographical uses" header instead? Or should Ottoman rule not be mentioned at all?
Hi, Tonuka. Your proposal is interesting and if there are no objections from other editors I agree that Ottoman Macedonia could be mentioned under the "Other geographical uses". Jingiby (talk) 06:43, 24 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ottoman Macedonia is itself just a disambiguation page, just as this one. None of the entries there are reasonable candidates for inclusion here, as none of them are actually called "Macedonia". Please keep in mind what disambiguation pages are for. Fut.Perf.☼07:07, 24 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
A second thought made me doubt the validity of including even that page.
On the one hand, I said previously that I considered the omission of Ottoman rule a flaw, but on the other hand, it's not reasonable to assume the title "North Macedonia under the Ottoman Empire" is ambiguous with the title "Macedonia".
I no longer see a way Ottoman rule over Macedonia could be referenced in this dab page while staying within Wikipedia guidelines. Tonuka (talk) 00:57, 25 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Actually, scholars use the term "Ottoman Macedonia" to refer to the region of Macedonia under the Ottoman Empire. It is not exclusive to North Macedonia. I have a mixed feeling on whether it should be included. There are also other terms that scholars have used (such as "Serbian Macedonia"), even though they were not used in the ruling countries.
