MOSIS in UK

[edit]

There also exists a compny called MOSIS in the UK (MOSIS International Systems Ltd) that specialises in measuring the stability of floating systems (ships, semi-submersibles etc.) Should be mentioned or does the MOSIS discussed here have special status Subsea (talk) 14:06, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Extending this article

[edit]

MOSIS had a huge impact on VLSI research, and deserves a much more extensive article. I will work on it as I get time.

Note that I am not an unbiased observer; I supported MOSIS for several years then worked directly for the project for several years in the 1980s and 90s.

(ftp.isi.edu is no longer active although the index still points to it; at least some of the old technical reports are available via the Internet Archive, e.g. https://web.archive.org/web/20160322124140/ftp://ftp.isi.edu/isi-pubs/rs-84-139.pdf)

Additions begun

Bad link/historical numbers.

[edit]

The first referenced link https://www.mosis.com/what-is-mosis is no longer valid (as of 2025-09-16). The Internet Archive includes a number of archived copies of it.

Fabs

[edit]

Unless I missed it somewhere, those early tech reports don't list the fab services used. That would be great historical info to add. Rdviii (talk) 01:51, 17 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

GaAs

[edit]

MOSIS also supported GaAs as well as nMOS and CMOS, but I don't have specific info on that yet. Rdviii (talk) 01:52, 17 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

First run was completed by January 1990.

End of educational support

[edit]

According to https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.02055, "MOSIS fabricated free chips for university VLSI classes, initially with NSF support and later with profits from their commercial operations, but ceased offering this service in 2020."
