Advertising Hype

The following statement is taken from Semtech's Application Note:

“Semtech’s LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology (LoRa Technology) is a long range, low power wireless chipset that has become the de facto technology for Internet of Things (IoT) networks worldwide.”

LoRa is a wonderful technology for Sensors. I think the range it achieves is amazing. But its very low bandwidth will never make it the "de facto technology" for IoT networks world wide. We make a lot of IoT products and they all require much more bandwidth than LoRa allows.

I don't feel like I am a qualified editor to remove this - but someone should. A more accurate statement would be:

“Semtech’s LoRa devices and wireless radio frequency technology (LoRa Technology) is a long range, low power wireless chipset that is used in a lot of Internet of Things (IoT) networks worldwide.”

There is now also this passage in the text, which reads like marketing material to me, and is very much non-neutral:

Deployments of LoRa technology

I'm doubtful of the value of adding an extensive list of deployments of LoRa technology. Perhaps a few representative examples give a better idea of the applications of this technology, but a long list seems like promotional material, which has been an issue associated with this article. However, other editors made a considerable effort in adding these examples, including references, so I'm hesitant to remove them without prior discussion. Helium LoRaWAN Network

I added a link to the wiki page for Helium but it was reverted by an anonymous user without comment. This LoRaWAN network has approx. 800,000 devices providing coverage globally and is one of the most visible use cases. I'm open to discussion if another editor feels this isn't suitable. Contradicting information

The third paragraph of the article states "data rate ranges from 0.3 kbit/s to 50 kbit/s" while the first paragraph of the "Features" section states "can achieve data rates between 0.3 kbit/s and 27 kbit/s". patents?

I am surprised to not read about patents, here. It seems to me critical information about the protoco, that essentially all of LoRa is patented by Semtech.

I'd like to:

  1. get better sources for this, i know of https://devopedia.org/lora#qst-ans-10, which links to https://www.link-labs.com/blog/nb-iot-vs-lora-vs-sigfox
  2. which parts are patented
  3. which patents apply, the article already refers to https://patents.google.com/patent/US20160094269A1/en, i think, but doesn't link to it, and it also mentions a couple more patents (or research papers) without context
  4. know when the patent(s) expire, the above patent is from 2015, according to the google page above, it would expire in 2035-09-09

Image caption claims the signal was TRANSMITTED by an RTL-SDR but that's likely wrong

The article includes an image from an RF signal analyzer application that purports to show a LoRa signal visually. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LoRa-RF_Ananlyzer-12-7.8k.1.jpg) That's OK. The problem is the caption below that image, which says that the LoRa signal was TRANSMITTED by the RTL-SDR.

There are two problems with that. One is that the RTL-SDR does not contain a transmitter; it is receive-only. The other is that LoRa is a patented protocol whose transmitters are implemented in proprietary chips licensed by Semtech. So it would be notable if there was an available software implementation that was transmitting well enough to interoperate with licensed proprietary chips and accurate enough to form the signal that Wikipedia was using to illustrate how LoRa works. But this noteworthy background is never mentioned.

My guess is that the English language caption was poorly translated from the French description of the image, which appears to say that the LoRa signal was RECEIVED by an RTL-SDR. (I don't speak French so I can't vouch for this interpretation). fr:LoRa uses a completely different caption on the same image, referring to the LoRa protocol parameters that are being illustrated.

Would somebody who knows a bit more, please resolve this, probably by changing the caption in this page? Thank you. --Gnuish (talk) 09:20, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Fixed the caption. Obvious error. Not sure what you mean by "an available software implementation that was transmitting". Neither software nor the computers it runs on are radio transmitters even though computers do generate radio noise.
On a related note, I have been keeping my eye on DASH7 for a while. Someday it may become the basis of something like meshtastic but it isn't there yet. Other possibles some more likely than others, are Narrowband IoT, LTE-M, Weightless and Sigfox. --Guy Macon (talk) 13:19, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
