People with Gupta surname

Should people with Gupta surname be added? Most people with Gupta surname are Agrawals (except some people from Eastern UP and Bihar) and there are a number of notable Agrawals with that surname. A separate section for Guptas? Or should they be left out because there is no way to verify?Pheeniks (Talk) 21:16, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

In Wikipedia, surnames are no proof of anything - we need reliable sources, but this article has a bigger problem.
It contradicts itself - is it about "a Hindu surname found throughout Northern, Central and Western India" "those people who use Agrawal (or other spelling variations)" or is it about "people who belong to the Agrawal community" ??? Arjayay (talk) 21:31, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

All of the surnames have been created till now. I don't think any new surname is going top pop-up now. So, all the surnames are mentioned under a community in relation on wikipedia only. Nothing irrelevant coming on the way. HistorianV (talk) 14:45, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Caste verification and self identification

Verification of caste for BLPs requires self-identification as per WP:CASTEID, even for dead individuals, a majority of the entries lack proper citations that identify them belonging from the Baniya caste.

The article requires major cleanup especially for BLPs, tagging relevant editors if you can help in finding self-identification or general citations for the article, otherwise they are due for removal.

Majority of them I have added already mention themself as bania on theirrespective wikipedia pages and other are recognized by their surnames from the wikipedia page list. There is no BLPs without self-identifiation from their respective wikipedia page or do not belong to caste's surname. Any major changes will lead to major consequences. +1, Either a source needs to explicitly mention the person as a baniya or incase of BLPs, they must self identify themselves as baniyas for affirmation of their caste on Wikipedia. Xoocit (talk) 20:18, 18 October 2025 (UTC)

I appreciate your contributions, I suggest you to read WP:CASTEID and visting pages like List of Jats as a starting point to understand how the citations for caste work on Wikipedia, I am sure we can correct this page and make it upto Wikipedia standards. Xoocit (talk) 15:52, 20 October 2025 (UTC)

Large scale removal of unsourced content

Hello, I have just removed a large number of entries from this list in accordance with Wikipedia's core content policies.

• For living persons (BLPs), any claim about caste is contentious. Per WP:BLPCAT and the WP:CASTEID guideline, this information should not be included unless the person has publicly self-identified with the group and it is supported by a high-quality reliable source. The removed entries did not meet this strict standard.
  • To add BLPs into this list try looking for first person statements from the living person where they describe themselves belonging to the caste, phrases like "I am a baniya" or "I come from a baniya family/background"
• For all other entries (including deceased persons), all content must be verifiable WP:V. The removed entries had no citations at all.
  • To add them back to the article, look for sources that describe them as a "baniya" It need not be a direct statement from the person, any independent reliable source would do.
• The burden of proof WP:BURDEN is on the editor wishing to add or restore this information to provide a reliable source for each claim.
